I love getting Family photos done.  I am always the one behind the camera (although my husband does an amazing job when I do hand the camera over to him;) and it gives me a chance to relax and love on my family. I'm excited to have new photos to hang on our walls and gift to family members.  Most of all, it means my children will have photos of me with them to look back on years form now and know I was there too.  However, I know my family may not be as excited as I am to get their photos taken.  As a family photographer, I have also come across many Dad's (and toddlers) who weren't excited to get their photos done at first either!  But by the end of our session together, Dad will be thanking me and saying how much fun they had, and little ones will be giving me big hugs goodbye!

So here are some tips to get your family on board and excited for your family photos soon!

Mamas, Getting Excited starts with you

I know you want everything to go smoothly and how much these photos mean to you. You want your husband to be relaxed and smiling, and your kiddos to behave perfectly.  Your family can sense that pressure and feel resentful the more stressed you are.  So take a deep breathe.  Relax. The less you stress, the less they will too.  Your only job is to show up, love on your family, and leave the rest to me.

A fun family experience

Making your session a time for the whole family to be together is really important. Tell them you are going to play at a park (field, beach, etc.) where they can run and play while a photographer takes some pictures of them. Then afterwards, go out for dinner or to your favorite ice cream shop! Talk about the experience as something you get to do together instead of something you have to do.

Your session should be the focus of the day.  If your session is at sunset (which I recommend our session being) and your kiddos have already had a jam-packed day, they will more likely be overtired and cranky.

Tell the kids what to expect

Be honest and tell your kids what will happen.  They can be anxious if they don't remember the last time they had photos done, or don't know what is going to happen. Tell them you are going to be seeing a friend who is going to take your pictures while you play and be together as a family. Tell them that your friend will ask them to stand or sit together a few different ways and that it will be pretty quick too;) Even showing them a picture of me on my website before hand can eleviate any worry of a new friend.

Tell your husband how you feel

Talking to your husband and letting him know you understand having pictures done isn't his favorite thing in the world, but that it means so much to you.  He will appreciate you for that:)

Embrace the chaos

I'll say it again, your job is to relax and love on your family and let me worry about the rest.  Believe me, I know how crazy a family dynamic can be, there's never a dull moment in my family! I have seen it all; shy kids who don't want anything to do with me, energetic ones who need to run and explore, and ones who won't stop talking to me;) I have no expectations for your children and will go off of their energy. That's the beauty that I see through my lens, and I will show you just how beautiful your family's chaos is, I promise.

Lastly, trust me.

You have hired me for a reason. Maybe you came across my work online or a friend recommended me (thank you to them!).  And maybe getting ready didn't go as smoothly as you thought.  The baby took a nap earlier than you wanted and is approaching bedtime now (that always happens, right!).  Or your daughter had a meltdown in the car and you are all in terrible moods now. (yup, true story).  I promise,  if you just take a deep breathe, trust me to capture your family beautifully, you will not be disappointed.

MOTHERHOOD.  It's raw. HARD. A constant pull.  But most of all, its so darn BEAUTIFUL.

Thats why I am excited to be offering a day of minis for all you Mamas.  A time for you to enjoy your little ones. To laugh. To play. To LOVE hard.

I don't offer many mini sessions because honestly, I am an over shooter.  I want to capture your whole families story. I don't want to limit how much i shoot.  I deliver large galleries because you should have all of the images that tell your story.  But, at the same time I understand life is busy.  Sometimes all you want is a few updated images of you and your babies so that they will remember that you were there too. You don't want to worry about a full session and your kids behaving for the whole time (although I promise you that your time with me will be fun and am not worried about cranky kids!). You want something quick but memorable.

These days, almost every child attending some sort of school is experiencing school photo day!  Everyone knows the "smile and say cheese!" that has become accustom to school photo day.  However, those images are boring, forced and don't portray a child's true personality at all!  School photos can be so much more than that!

With Fine Art Portraits I genuinely capture a child's personality however they are feeling that day.  Maybe it's shy and reserved or happy and silly.  In no more time than photo day normally takes, I engage closely with each child so their experience is FUN and they feel relaxed and comfortable, which in turn allows them to be themselves.  Isn't that how we all want to remember them?!  Full of life, laughter and self-confidence.

I only take on a limited amount of schools to ensure superior service and artistic images.  I offer all the services that a larger corporate company does, yet my experience is more personable and communication with school and parents is streamlined. I use soft natural light and a black backdrop to focus on the child and make classic art. Each child will receive at least 2 images (but likely more depending on how open they are with me) in a personal online gallery where parents clearly see proofs and chose the photos they want printed, as opposed to having a pose chosen for them.  Boutique products are also available in the gallery.  Schools receive a portion of profits, so it is a wonderful fundraiser for the schools as well!

Siblings are welcome to come too!  It's a great opportunity to get images of them together and is so much fun.

I am passionate about Fine Art Portraits and giving families everything I want for my own family when it comes to pictures; beautiful, emotive, honest images that I am proud to display in my home. You can check out further frequently asked questions about school photos, as well as see my full school portfolio here.   If you would like genuine, artistic, and timeless images like these of your child, please contact me to get into your child's school.

Having a newborn is so amazing yet so intense.  You are you taking care of a new life and tending to its every need. And not only has a baby been born, but a new mom, a dad, if there are older children, a big brother or sister is born too. The whole family has changed for the better and it sure does take some adjusting.  But somehow, in all the beautiful chaos, the days and nights float by and you can't remember what you did yesterday, let alone today!  You hold your new baby so perfectly into you, you can breathe them in and study every detail in hopes that you won’t forget. I’m here to tell you that you do. It all goes so fast that before you know it they are scooting around, chubby legged, babbling up a storm. And you look at them trying so hard to remember what those first few weeks were like. THIS. This feeling is what I strive to capture with my newborn ART. Of feeling pure, intense love and emotion because I don’t want you to ever forget it.

The month of February is full of LOVE!  Especially on the IG community with a very special project, that was started by Danielle Awwad as her four year old son was born with 10 different  heart Defects.  In 2016 she began The Paper Heart Project which is a campaign that spreads awareness about Congenital Heart Defects also called CHDs. Congenital Heart Defects are the most common type of birth defect. The severity of CHDs can range from mild to deadly. One out of 110 babies are born with Congenital Heart Defects yet it is one of the most underfunded and under researched childhood illnesses.

This was my second year participating in this amazing project.  Doing arts and crafts with my daughter was actually very therapeutic. She didn't want to have her picture taken at first, but when I showed her a picture of Danielle's boy and explained why we were doing it, she instantly began asking me question after question about hearts and her son, and was very into pictures!! The last one is very special, she was hanging my valentine!

Here are a few from our project <3
